Owen Jump

Biography

Dr Owen Jump is a Lecturer in the Centre for the Integration of Research Teaching & Learning (CIRTL) UCC. Owen completed a BA in the School of Applied Psychology in University College Cork and progressed in the department to complete a PhD in Biological and Health Psychology. Owen had previously worked in the area of drug rehabilitation, suicide prevention and mental health intervention for vulnerable populations. While working on his PhD Owen began a role with the CIRTL, initially working part time as a Research Support Officer and Part time Lecturer in Community Based Participatory Research. During this time Owen developed a keen interest in community empowerment and educational development and these interests now form the core activities of his teaching and research.

Research Interests

My PhD research examined biobehavioural reactivity to experience in laboratory and ecological settings, and focused on how emergent devices and technologies that allow for easily obtained measures of cardiovascular activity could be used in practicable and understandable health applications. In particular how technologies that enable people to monitor their heart rate can be used to understand stress, health and wellbeing, and how these measures can be related to established laboratory protocols. This research uses several approaches, including experimental methods in combination with ecological assessments to examine the usefulness and accuracy of these measures in describing daily experiences.

During my time as both an undergraduate and PhD student I worked in a variety of Community settings to gain valuable experience. This work includes capacity building and development via participatory methodologies with community organisations in the Cork area. It has also included work with vulnerable groups in drug rehabilitation, people experiencing homelessness, and working with cohorts of young men at risk for suicide. This area of research continues and links in with my teaching roles, primarily in the delivery of training for Postgraduate students in Community Based Participatory Research.

Further to my work experience during my PhD I progressed to my role with CIRTL where my research interests expanded to include teaching and learning enhancement. My initial research interests in CIRTL began with the development and implementation of Learning Analytics, in particular how student data can be ethically utilised to improve student learning and examination specific case studies to understand how and if using these data can actually lead to enhanced learning.

My research in CIRTL has expanded to include, postgraduate teaching development, where I am particularly interested in how the use of participatory methods can be leveraged to build capacity and improve PG student development.

Finally I am working on a number of projects examining the use of technology in teaching and learning, including case studies of Extended Reality (XR) platforms in Science education and Law.
My work in this area, along with colleagues, has been awarded National Forum Disciplinary Excellence in Teaching Learning and Assessment (DELTA) Award for their work in Learning enhancement using extended reality in science education.
