Research Interests

I am now a full time administrator and I remain linked in with my primary research interests which are in Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI) in Health Services and Public Health.  In 2015 I led an Irish Research Council New Foundations project incorporating a needs assessment of Assistance Dog (AD) Programmes in Ireland.  Previously I led a project with the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind examining the impact of their AD Programme on families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  My other research interests are in the field of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.  From 2011 to 2013 I was Project Manager on the ERASMUS Biodesign for Health Applications (BioApp) Project which focused on development of a framework for undergraduate innovation in biomedical engineering.  In the resulting ‘Biodesign’ module, undergraduate engineering and medical students are taught biomedical device design-targeted knowledge and problem solving skills, and participate in team based projects.  BioApp has since been has been selected as a "success story" by a panel of experts from the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission.  The BioApp team received ERASMUS Plus funding (2015) to implement phase two of this project.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

Currently I am involved in teaching and dissemination activities related to Research Support Services (grant writing, reviewing, standards, how to find funding).  Together with colleagues in the UCC Library and the Clinical Research Facility I facilitate and co-ordinate training on the UCC Digital Badge in Responsible Conduct in Research.

In my previous teaching roles my interests were in research design, qualitative and quantitative methods, behaviour change theories and models, data management and analysis, project management, statistics fundamentals, health promotion and social marketing.  I taught on a wide variety of courses in the School of Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCC including modules on research design, statistics in medicine and public health, principles and practice of health promotion, behaviour change and qualitative methods.
