Research Profile

Michelle Cronin

Biography

Michelle leads the Marine Ecology Group in CMRC which comprises of postdoctoral researchers, Phd and MSc students. She has initiated and managed a number of research projects on marine mammal ecology and led national and regional seal population assessment programs and biotelemetry studies. Her main research area is marine mammal abundance, habitat use & foraging ecology and interactions with fisheries. Michelle is PI on numerous projects and responsible for project and budget management, grant funding applications and supervision of Phd, MSc students and the research team.

Research Interests

Dr. Cronin leads the Marine Ecology Group of the Coastal & Marine Research Centre in UCC. Research of the group focuses on assessing the abundance, distribution, and foraging ecology of key marine species and their interactions with human activities through a combination of surveys, long term monitoring, diet studies and biotelemetry. Dr. Cronin has been investigating seal abundance and habitat use in southwest Ireland since 2002 and this formed part of her doctorate thesis. She initiated a study of the offshore movements and behaviour of harbour seals in Irish waters using telemetry techniques and this research is ongoing, now incorporating grey seals. She is involved in a multidisciplinary initiative to put in place an ecosystems approach to fisheries management, focusing on top predator interactions with Irish fisheries. Dr. Cronin collaborates with international seal biologists and was involved in determining population estimates of both species of seal at a national level. She is also involved in marine mammal monitoring and assessing the impacts of anthropogenic activities on marine mammals in the Irish coastal zone.
