Maria-Alejandra Calle-Saldarriaga

BIOGRAPHY

 Maria Alejandra Calle is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Law, University College Cork (Ireland). Maria Alejandra holds the Faculty of Law PhD Scholarship as well as the Comyn Kelleher Tobin Graduate Bursary.In 2012 she was awarded the Aidan Synnott Graduate Study Travel Bursary scheme (Faculty of Law, University College Cork).

Her doctoral research is focused on International Trade Law and the Environment.The working title of Maria-Alejandra’s PhD research project is “Environmental Concerns in Processes and Production Methods (PPMs): A View from WTO Law and International Environmental Governance” Her research seeks to identify the scope of environmental concerns articulated by some WTO Members and a sample of sixteen international environmental NGOs (including private standard setting organizations). The concerns identified in Maria-Alejandra’s research relate to six categories of specific PPMs such as biodiversity, forests, oceans, alternative energies, climate change and agriculture. Additionally, her thesis addresses the legality of environmental PPMs according to the most recent WTO case law and the conceptual framework developed by international trade law scholars. Her analysis also seeks to reconcile the PPM phenomenon with such emerging paradigms as Global Administrative Law and Global Environmental Governance.  Her research project is supervised by Dr. Owen McIntyre and shall be completed by September 2014.She is also a teaching assistant in European Law at University College Cork.

Maria Alejandra also works at the Department of International Business at Universidad EAFIT (Colombia) as a full time lecturer for the courses in International Trade Law, International Dispute Settlement, Commercial Diplomacy and International Negotiation.

She holds a Master in International Economic Law and Policy from the Universidad de Barcelona (Spain) and a Master in Administration Sciences from Universidad EAFIT (Colombia).Maria Alejandra obtained her LLB at Universidad de Medellin (Colombia).In 2010 and 2012 she was a research fellow at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development UNCTAD (Switzerland).
