Research Profile

Angela Flynn

Biography

Originally a nurse in Cardiothoracics and Intensive/Critical Care and I having worked clinically in Guys Hospital London and in Cork University Hospital, I am now a full time lecturer in the School of Nursing & Midwifery since 2002.
My Masters thesis focused on quality of care and the role of policies/protocols. The subsequent publication is here.
I have been active in research regarding
pedagogical approaches including Problem Based Learning and Simulation, and was part of a research team who won a number of Teaching and Learning awards.
Having gained funding from the Irish Heart Foundation I carried out research in relation to Cardiac Patients and their Quality of Life. This research project uncovered stark inequalities in health and in access to health care between patients from different socioeconomic groups, with a significant factor being the possession of private health insurance. Published here: https://doi.org/10.12968/bjca.2016.11.8.406
This finding prompted me to examine the realm of Health Inequities as they pertain to Ireland's health system (See Research Section) and, thus, this was the subject of my PhD thesis.
My
PhD (Social Sciences) investigated the persistence of an inequitable health care system in Ireland using a Foucauldian genealogical approach. I submitted my thesis in March 2014, successfully defended my thesis in June 2014 and was conferred in February 2015.
With a Social Sciences knowledge and my Health Sciences experience, I am now in a unique position to bridge both fields and engage in interdisciplinary research activities.
I engaged in interdisciplinary activity with colleagues in the School of Applied Social Studies in relation to the development of cultural competency among health and social care students.
I engaged in a funded interdisciplinary project regarding the involvement of sustainability in the educational preparation of health and social care students.
I was the PI of the Irish Team on the Learning to Live (L2L) research project, an Erasmus+ project about supporting refugee and migrant students in Higher Education.
Having taken research sabbatical leave in S2 of 2022-23 I am investigating how to embed sustainability in nursing education. As part of this research I am undertaking a survey on nursing attitudes to sustainability using the SANS_2 instrument having collaborated with colleagues in Esslingen University, Germany.
Outside of teaching and research, I contribute very widely to the University community through considerable committee involvement, including the Governing Body, formerly Academic Council, the University Equality Committee, Institute of Social Sciences for the 21st Century (ISS21) EMB, University of Sanctuary Working Group, former member of the Digital Education Advisory Group, GB Committee on Staff, College of Medicine and Health College Council, and others.

Research Interests

Health Inequalities
I completed my PhD Social Sciences in UCC, jointly provided by the Schools of Sociology, Applied Social Studies and Government beginning in 2010, submitted and defended in 2014. The thesis was titled: "Health Care and Neoliberalism in Ireland: Withholding the Gift and Corrupting the Social Contract". My thesis used a historical genealogical approach to investigate the persistence of an unequal health care system in Ireland. https://cora.ucc.ie/handle/10468/1994

I have continued to have an interest in research surrounding health inequalities, and in particular, the means by which nursing students can be adequately prepared to understand such inequalities, and to be proactive in addressing and tackling them. To this end a collaborative research project is underway with Canadian Educators in UBC. A research visit to UBC is currently being planned for Spring 2017.

Promoting Intercultural Communication and Diversity in Teaching and Work Practice (April 2014)

This seminar explored the benefits of intercultural training and how this can enhance and build on staff and students’ working relationships through developing new areas of training within teaching and practice settings. It aimed to provide essential learning points and interactive resources to enable participants to work competently in intercultural settings. The primary aim of the seminar was to respond to the growing need of students and staff in developing their knowledge and capacity to appropriately deal with and accommodate diversity in their practice settings. The seminar also aimed to equip participants with knowledge and understanding to help contribute to better practice in intercultural relations both in teaching and practice settings. It provided participants a participants to examine personal and professional values, attitudes and behavioural practices in relation to diversity, difference and equality.

This collaborative initiative between Doras Luimni, The School of Applied Social Studies and The School of Nursing and Midwifery will be part of an on-going initiative with the aim of developing modules both at undergraduate and post graduate level.

Problem Based Learning & Simulation as Instructional Methodologies - Co-investigator
I was a founder member of this research team which has examined the effectiveness of problem based learning (PBL) and simulation as instructional methodologies in attaining clinical competencies in the nursing management of acute illness episodes. This project combines research with teaching and learning strategies which aim to enhance the experience of third level undergraduate students studying General Nursing, who self-select to partake in a new 4th year elective module. The project had initially two major stages. Firstly, the development of a new 5 credit module (NU4032 Advanced nursing assessment and integrated patient management in the acute care setting), and secondly a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of the content, and instructional methodologies utilised within the module. This research project has attracted research funding in the form of a €5,000 team award from The Catherine McAuley School of Nursing & Midwifery Research Award and a further €5,000 on successful application to the National Academy for the Integration of Research into Teaching & Learning (NAIRTL). We were also recipients of UCC's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2007/08. As I began to develop my own research project above and enrolled for my PhD, I chose to step out of this research team.
