Research Profile

Eileen O'Rourke

Biography

Eileen holds an M.Sc in Environmental Science from Trinity College, Dublin, and a Ph.D in Human Ecology from the International Ecotechnology Research Centre, Cranfield University, UK. She was awarded a European Marie Curie post-doctoral Fellowship, and has worked on two European Research Projects (Medalus & Archaeomedes), relating to Desertification and Land Degradation in the Mediterranean. She has undertaken substantial field work in France, Ireland and Africa. Eileen joined the Geography Department of UCC in 2001. She wrote and co-ordinated a large Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded research project on biodiversity change on the Iveragh uplands, SW Ireland.  She is an active member of the High Nature Value Farming European network, supported by the European Forum for Nature Conservation and Pastoralism (EFNCP).  Her research interests lie at the interface between ecology and society, with particular reference to farming systems and rural landscapes.

Research Interests

Eileen O'Rourke's research interests lie at the interface of natural and social science systems, spanning the fields of ecology and anthropology, in an attempt to understand human - modified environments, with particular emphasis on biodiversity and the landscape. Her current research interests are in conservation, biodiversity and the management of cultural landscapes, including European post-agrarian landscapes. She is an active member of the Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape' (PECSRL), and the European Forum for Nature Conservation and Pastoralism (EFNCP). She also participates in a working group exploring human-environmental interaction within a Complex Systems Framework.
