Research Profile

Marian McCarthy

Biography

Dr Marian McCarthy is the Interim Vice-President for Teaching and Learning at UCC and has overall responsibility for teaching and learning at University College Cork.

From September 2015 to February 6th 2018, Marian was the Director of the Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) at UCC. Prior to that, from 2006-2015, she was Co- Director of Ionad Bairre (now CIRTL). A Senior Lecturer in Education since 2013, Marian taught in the School of Education full time from 1995 to 2006 and was then seconded long-term to CIRTL. As Director of CIRTL, her primary responsibility was for the Accredited Programme in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, which provides certification for staff who wish to research their teaching and their students' learning.

Marian’s primary research areas are in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory and Teaching for Understanding (TfU). She fuses these to provide a robust disciplinary, research, and pedagogical framework for staff who teach in university and third level settings.

In 2017 she received the UCC Impact Award, in recognition of the work she has initiated and sustained across the University for decades in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. In 2012, she was awarded the Enhancing the Student Experience Award at UCC. In 2004 she received the President's Award for Innovation in Teaching (UCC), and a National Award for Teaching Excellence (Special Commendation, team award). In 2002 she received the President's Award for Teaching Excellence at UCC.

Marian founded and directed a Drama school for all age groups in Crosshaven, Co Cork (1980-1990). She directed several plays, including a production of O’ Casey’s The Plough and the Stars at the Everyman in 1992, which also gave her the opportunity to write a semiotic guide and analysis of the play for schools.  She continues to maintain links with the Arts through her interest in the work of the School of Music and Theatre at UCC and that of the Glucksman Gallery, UCC.

Marian is a member of the Board of Directors of AHEAD and is a member of the Educational Developers in Ireland Network (EDIN). Marian has also served two terms on the Governing Body of UCC and is currently serving her second term on the Senate of the National University of Ireland. Dr Marian McCarthy is the Interim Vice-President for Teaching and Learning at UCC and has overall responsibility for teaching and learning at University College Cork.

Research Interests

My research is influenced by two schools of thought which also create interesting synergies: The first is the work of the Project Zero Classroom, at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, with its focus on Teaching for Understanding and the idea that people have a variety of intelligences and learn in different ways.  A key aspect of this research is its focus on the Arts (about whose effect on cognitive development ‘zero’ was known in the 1960s- hence the project’s name) as providing multiple ways of knowing and being and their role in educational, as well as artistic and aesthetic, development.  I am interested, therefore, in researching how I can teach for understanding across the disciplines at UCC and how I can encourage colleagues to do likewise and research multi-modal approaches to student learning. This research was nurtured in my years in the Multiple Intelligences Curriculum and Assessment Project at UCC (1995-2000) and my experience in and beyond that as a member of the faculty of the Project Zero Classroom Summer Institute (1998-2007).  My PhD research (2002-2010) documents work in this field at UCC, both in the Education Department, in the context of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education, and in Ionad Bairre, in the context of the Accredited Programme in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Equally influential to my research is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) movement, based on the work of Ernest Boyer (1990) and his colleagues at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, based at Stanford, California.   This approach focuses on teaching as an integral part of research in the disciplines, inviting all who teach to look for the evidence of student learning. I am interested in the peer review process which scaffolds this research and which is the common denominator between teaching and ‘research’ in the traditional sense.   Such inquiry aligns well with the Harvard work, which equips teachers with pedagogical frameworks to investigate their teaching and their students’ learning, generating new knowledge which can be shared and built on by other colleagues across the disciplines.  I am interested, therefore, in how I can integrate these two strands of research, at Harvard and Carnegie, to advance teaching and learning at UCC and have presented numerous papers and workshops at SoTL conferences internationally on this subject and at Project Zero  Summer Institutes.  It is also fortunate that we have The National Academy for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL) on our door step at UCC, to promote this agenda and give third – level teachers the opportunity to publish in this field, which I am equally interested in supporting.

I am interested in the Dramatic and the Visual Arts, particularly in educational contexts. My research focus is on Drama and Theatre in Education approaches and Role Play and Simulation as important modes of experience.  The Visual Arts also hold a research interest for me, particularly in the context of Museums and University Galleries as sites of learning.  I have conducted research in these fields in the context of the Master’s programme in Drama and Theatre Studies at UCC, as well as in the Accredited Programme in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Broadly, I am interested in active learning approaches to engage students and in multiple ways of creating and representing teaching and learning. Hence, my PhD research also focused on the portfolio method of documenting research and on reflective practice as ways of scaffolding inquiry and generating new knowledge.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

My interest is in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)  and how to promote it across all four Colleges of UCC.  The Accredited Programme which I co-ordinate and direct is based on SoTL principles, enshrined in the Learning Outcomes of the courses,  focused on making teaching and learning visible, open to critique and capable of being built on by others. To name the parts of teaching and learning, I draw on the Teaching for Understanding approach developed at Project Zero, in  the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  I am particularly interested in Disciplinary Understanding and how that informs the teaching of the disciplines. My PhD research is in this field adn entitled: Teaching for Understanding at University College Cork: Advancing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.  I am also interested in the theory of Multiple Intelligences and its acknowledgement that students learn in different ways and its implication that teachers need to teach and assess in a variety of ways.

I am also interested in the role of the Arts in Education and have a particular interest in Drama and Theatre in Education, Applied Drama/Theatre, the Visual Arts and Mime and Dance as ways of enhancing pedagogy and the artistic medium in its own right.
