Research Profile

Biography

Professor Richard Greene, a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, gained much of his clinical experience in the Coombe Womens' Hospital, Dublin. In July 1999, he took up a position as Fellow in Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, USA. On his return to Ireland in 2001, he joined UCC as Senior Lecturer/Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He took up his current posts as Director of the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre (NPEC) and Professor of Clinical Obstetrics, UCC, in 2007. Prof. Greene was instrumental in commissioning and establishing the new maternity services at CUMH and continues to maintain a senior management position within the service; he is now chair of the Data Governance Group for the South/South West Hospital Group. His research interests include maternal-fetal medicine, epidemiology, health services research incorporating quality of service and the use of Information Technology towards the improvement of healthcare.  Specifically, his future interests lie in the further development of NPEC as a national service with the aim to improve clinical services for Irish patients. Towards this goal, he has been involved in the development of a single national chart for obstetrics.  He has initiated the idea of a national electronic health record and remains centrally involved in the Maternal Newborn Clinical Management System (MN_CMS) project, to get a single electronic medical record for all mothers and babies in Ireland.  He sees this a vital development in improving care in the maternity services, it is recognized as a central plank of the national maternity strategy.  Prof. Greene believes it is also the 'Pathfinder Project' for a complete eHR in Ireland.  Prof. Greene is also committed to advancing the UCC Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology's goal of becoming a major research unit in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at basic science and clinical level.  Prof. Greene's clinical practice is undertaken at the Cork University Maternity Hospital and at Cork Obstetrics and Gynaecology Associates

Research Interests

My current focus in research is aimed at advancing the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UCC's goal to become a major research unit in our specialty at a molecular and clinical level. This includes: 1.Direct involvement in the planning, funding generation and the development of the research unit, on the 5th Floor of Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) incorporating the Anu Research Centre for Reproductive Molecular Research, The National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre and the Centre for Gynaecological Innovation. 2.The development of a research ethos among the doctors in training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This involves attendance at a weekly research meeting on Friday mornings during academic term time and providing mentorship to individuals undertaking research and audit. At the research meeting, research ideas are generated, assigned to and developed with the doctors in training. 3.Member of the Global Network for Reproductive Health Research - this group is an international group of clinicians with training in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Epidemiology working in the developed and developing world, planning clinical research. Previous research has included prevalence studies of Group B Streptococci, effects of pesticides on reproductive health in South America. Funding has mainly come from Overseas development agencies in the USA. Current studies include - emergency cerclage (we have not had any patients meeting the inclusion criteria) and the development of a longitudinal observational study on Doppler indices in complex pregnancies attempting to get large numbers of patients through collaboration. The director of the GNRHR is Dr J Tolosa, Washington University, Portland. My future research interest lies in the area of health services research incorporating risk management, quality of service and translational research locally within our own service and nationally through the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre
