Eoin Coughlan

Biography

Eoin Coughlan joined the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health UCC in December 2014 as a Post-Doctoral Researcher. He is currently working on the HRB funded ‘Research on the Emergency Department Adult Clinical Escalation (RED-ACE)’ based in the Emergency Department at Cork University Hospital. This is a mixed methods approach to assessing the impact of the implementation of the ‘Emergency Department Adult Patient Monitoring and Clinical Escalation Protocol (ED-ACE)’. The overarching objective of this research is to assess the impact of this Protocol – developed to reduce clinical risk through timely assessment and escalation – on the performance of the Cork University Hospital Emergency Department. The key research question examines whether implementation of an Emergency Department monitoring and escalation protocol for adult patients can reduce the number of critical incidents, improve timely intervention in patients requiring a higher level of care and improve clinical outcomes. The project aims to minimise clinical risk through timely reassessment and appropriate clinical escalation for patients who are waiting in the ED to be seen by ED medical teams and hospital in-patient on-call teams. Eoin is working under the supervision of Professor John Browne, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health UCC, and Dr Conor Deasy, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Cork University Hospital. Eoin graduated with a PhD from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in December 2014. His thesis was entitled “The Implementation of the Community Reinforcement Approach into Coolmine Therapeutic Community”. This was a mixed method study looking at the implementation of an evidence-based treatment for substance addiction into a long-standing, traditional residential drug treatment organisation. In addition to this he graduated from TCD with an M.Sc in Drug and Alcohol Policy (2011) and from the University of Limerick with an MA in Traditional Irish Music Performance (2009). Since 2010 Eoin has guest-lectured for the School of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College Dublin, the Department of Psychology, University of Limerick, and the Department of Applied Social Science at Stirling University. He has presented extensively both nationally and internally and in December 2014 was an invited speaker at the National Substance Misuse Conference held in Dublin. In May 2014 he was principal organiser of the European Working Group on Drugs Oriented Research (EWODOR) international drugs conference at Trinity College Dublin. Eoin is a member of the Clinical Advisory Board of Coolmine TC and is on the Board of Management of the Probation and Linkage in Limerick Scheme (PALLS). He is also a certified trainer in the Community Reinforcement Approach
