Research Profile

Fiona Riordan

Biography

Fiona is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher on the IDEAs (Improving Diabetes Eye-screening Attendance),  study which aims to test the feasibility of an intervention in primary care to improve the uptake of diabetic retinopathy screening. This project is funded by a HRB Definitive Interventions and Feasibility Award and led by Dr Sheena McHugh. Fiona has a BSc in Genetics from University College Cork and graduated from Imperial College London with a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2013. Before starting her PhD in 2015 she worked as a Research Assistant in Imperial College, University College Dublin, and University College Cork.

Research Interests

My research interests include chronic disease management, integrated care, quality improvement, and the implementation of service changes in primary care. My doctoral thesis was entitled "Improving the quality of diabetes care in a real world community context: influences, trends, and the implementation of a model of integrated care". As part of my doctoral research I examined how models of structured diabetes management in primary care perform in the Irish context, and evaluated the implementation of new ‘integrated’ diabetes nurse specialist posts introduced to facilitate the delivery of a new national model of integrated care.
