Research Profile

Julia Schneider

Biography

I joined the Department of Asian Studies at UCC as a Lecturer for China and Chinese history in 2019, and became Senior Lecturer in 2024. Before that, I was Akademische Rätin (sorry, the term is untranslatable) at the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Göttingen (2014-2019), and Guest Professor at the Institute for Sinology at Ghent University (2013-2014).

I hold a joint PhD (cotutelle) in Sinology from Ghent University and the University of Göttingen and an MA in Classical Sinology from the University of Heidelberg. My PhD dissertation about “Ethnicity and Sinicization” was awarded summa cum laude. My book Nation and Ethnicity, published in 2017 by Brill, won the Foundation Council Award of the University of Göttingen and has recently been covered in the New Books Podcast.

I am currently co-supervising three PhD candidates, two at UCC and one at the University of Vienna. Sabine Hinrichs has worked on her PhD project since 2021, focusing on the topic "From 'Outside of Civilization' to Becoming Part of the Nation? The Mongol Yuan Dynasty in Republican Era Chinese Historiography (1900-1949)". Sabine is co-supervised by Prof. emer. Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik (University of Vienna). She is a junior fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies University of Art and Design Linz. Liu Shuai has begun her research project in summer 2022 and is co-supervised by Dr. Helena Buffery (UCC). Shuai focuses on "The Translation, Dissemination, and Influence of Late Qing Prose in the Anglophone World". Zan Luyan has begun her PhD studies in autumn 2023. She holds a CSC scholarship for her project "Wife, Maidservant, Prostitute: Trafficking of Lower-Class Women in Shanghai during Republican Times (1912-1949)". Luyan is co-supervised by Dr. Kate Hodgson (UCC).

If you are interested in pursuing a PhD under my supervision, please contact me. I am interested in PhD projects about history of Ming, Qing, and Republican times with a special focus on conceptual and intellectual history, and ethnography and ethnic-cultural identity.

Research Interests

My research areas are historiography and conceptual history, ethnography and ethnohistory in Ming, Qing, and Republican times. Currently, I am researching into book censorship during Qing times with regard to questions of differentiation between identities of Self and Other, dichotomies of civilization vs. barbary (Hua/Yi discourse), and the ethnification processes during the Ming and Qing times (15th-18th century).
In my doctoral project, I was particularly interested in certain aspects of the Chinese discourse on nationalism, its integration of concepts of ethnic identity and assimilation, and in Chinese historiographical thinking with regard to non-Chinese dynasties, empires and ethnicities (1900s-1920s).
