He graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) degree from University College Cork in 2013 and completed a Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2014 whilst working in Sligo University Hospital, achieving First-Class Honours in both.
After completing the MPharm, Kieran worked as a hospital pharmacist in Sligo until May 2016, at which point he commenced his doctoral research in the School of Pharmacy, UCC. His PhD investigated the factors affecting the optimisation of medication appropriateness in hospitalised older adults.
During his PhD, Kieran worked as a primary researcher on the SENATOR project, which received €5.938 million in funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013). As part of this project, Kieran collaborated with clinical colleagues in Belgium, Iceland, Italy, Scotland, and Spain on a cluster randomised controlled trial of a software intervention aimed at minimising adverse drug reactions in acutely ill hospitalised older patients.
Since his PhD, Kieran has continued to conduct research and publish the findings in the area of medication optimisation in older adults. In 2023, he was awarded a place on the US Deprescribing Research Network’s (USDeN) Junior Investigator Intensive program. Kieran is also actively involved in several other research areas of patient-focused research, with collaborators locally, nationally, and internationally.
As part of his current role, Kieran is involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the BPharm/MPharm, MSc Clinical Pharmacy degree, and the Certificate in Nurse Prescribing in UCC. He also teaches undergraduate pharmacy students from Future University in Egypt – which is an affiliated institution of UCC.
Kieran has published a wide variety of research with students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is currently supervising four PhD students, and has supervised 27 students to completion for their research dissertations as part of taught Masters programmes: 15 x MSc Clinical Pharmacy, 11 x MPharm, and 1 x Master of Public Health. As well as supervising a range of under research projects, he has also been a preceptor for two 4th year Pharmacy experiential learning placements, and supervised students undertaking summer research projects.
Aligned with this, I have investigated the factors affecting the uptake of hospital pharmacist recommendations by physicians with the aim of informing the advancement of the pharmacist role to include prescribing activities. Other research interests include assessing the communication skills of pharmacy students, as well as the emerging role of pharmacists in general practice settings.
When teaching pharmacy students, I aim to equip them with key graduate skills and attributes in order to prepare them for ever-evolving pharmacist roles. I am involved in the facilitation of group-based interdisciplinary learning sessions between pharmacy students and medical students in the Mercy University Hospital, Cork with real patient cases as a joint venture with the School of Medicine, UCC to help overcome interprofessional barriers and encourage collaborative lifelong learning.
At an undergraduate level for pharmacy students, I am a strong advocate for the provision of timely face-to-face feedback to enhance students' knowledge, skills, and attributes to become competent pharmacists in line with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) Core Competency Framework. In particular, I routinely use 'simulated patients' to increase patient-centred learning, followed by feedback to show exemplary pharmacist behaviours.
However, I also value the importance in receiving feedback from students in order to continually improve my teaching and assessment. Furthermore, I am a member of the Pharmacy Education Research Group in the School of Pharmacy.
Biography

Research Interests
One of my primary research interests is in the area of potentially inappropriate prescribing in hospitalised older adults; with a focus on the behavioural determinants influencing prescribing optimisation. I have published research on the use of computerised interventions designed to improve prescribing and hospitalised older patient outcomes.Aligned with this, I have investigated the factors affecting the uptake of hospital pharmacist recommendations by physicians with the aim of informing the advancement of the pharmacist role to include prescribing activities. Other research interests include assessing the communication skills of pharmacy students, as well as the emerging role of pharmacists in general practice settings.

Teaching Interests
I teach across a range of healthcare disciplines, and continually promote the importance of the pharmacy profession. I thoroughly enjoy my role as an educator, and find it very rewarding to observe students' development in their knowledge and skills over the years in UCC.When teaching pharmacy students, I aim to equip them with key graduate skills and attributes in order to prepare them for ever-evolving pharmacist roles. I am involved in the facilitation of group-based interdisciplinary learning sessions between pharmacy students and medical students in the Mercy University Hospital, Cork with real patient cases as a joint venture with the School of Medicine, UCC to help overcome interprofessional barriers and encourage collaborative lifelong learning.
At an undergraduate level for pharmacy students, I am a strong advocate for the provision of timely face-to-face feedback to enhance students' knowledge, skills, and attributes to become competent pharmacists in line with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) Core Competency Framework. In particular, I routinely use 'simulated patients' to increase patient-centred learning, followed by feedback to show exemplary pharmacist behaviours.
However, I also value the importance in receiving feedback from students in order to continually improve my teaching and assessment. Furthermore, I am a member of the Pharmacy Education Research Group in the School of Pharmacy.
