Mohamad Saab

Biography

Dr Mohamad M. Saab is a Lecturer in the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery and a Registered General Nurse. He holds a BSc in Nursing (2008, distinction) and MSc in Advanced Practice Nursing (2013, distinction) from the American University of Beirut, Rafic Hariri School of Nursing in Lebanon. He also holds a PhD in Nursing by publication (2017, 10 publications) as well as a Postgraduate Certificate (2018) and Diploma (2019) in Teaching and Learning in Higher education from UCC.

Mohamad has over €1.65 million in research funding, including €500,000 as Principal Investigator. He has recently secured Health Research Board Definitive Intervention and Feasibility Award (HRB DIFA) funding to the value of €391,369 in order test the feasibility of a virtual reality (VR) intervention to promote awareness of testicular diseases among Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) players in Ireland.

Dr Saab has over 60 research outputs including a number of peer-reviewed publications (full list of publication available at: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=bIOjJ-YAAAAJ&hl=en). He is research active in using VR in men’s health promotion and VR simulation in nursing education. Other topics include lung cancer referral pathways; health disparities including gender and sexual minorities; mental health research; nursing leadership; patient safety; and cancer awareness and survivorship.

Mohamad currently serves as Associate Editor in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention and the International Journal of Men’s Social and Community Health and Reviewer in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, Nursing Research, Journal of Clinical Nursing, Cancer Nursing, and Psycho-oncology, among others. Over the past nine years, he presented his work in over 50 national and international conferences and won multiple oral and poster presentation awards. 

At the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Saab coordinates the first year of the MSc in Advanced Practice. He is Module Leader and teaches on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, with a focus on oncology nursing, palliative care, simulation, and nursing research.

Dr Saab is member of a number of School and University committees and research groups (e.g., Academic Council, Quality Improvement Committee, Research Committee, Graduate Committee, Enhancing Cancer Awareness and Survivorship Programmes [E.CASP]) research group, and the UCC Health Matters – Sexual Health Working Group). He is Co-Chair of the School of Nursing And Midwifery’s Athena SWAN committee. He was heavily involved in preparing the application which granted the School its Athena SWAN Bronze award, making it the first School of Nursing and Midwifery to receive this prestigious award in Ireland. 

Research Interests

Dr Saab currently has over 60 research outputs and has a number of manuscripts that are currently under review and in preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals. He as expertise in various research methodologies including: systematic reviews, intervention development and testing, qualitative research, and theoretical framework development. 

Dr Saab is research active in four key areas: 
  1. Cancer and palliative care: awareness and help-seeking for testicular and lung cancers; public health messaging to promote testicular and lung cancer awareness; using virtual reality to raise testicular cancer awareness; lung cancer referral pathways; men's cancer information seeking; palliative care in older adults; cancer survivorship service provision. 
  2. Patient safety: early warning system education; serious reportable patient safety incidents.
  3. Mental health: suicide risk assessment; mental health in adolescents. 
  4. Nursing education/continuous professional development: peer group clinical supervision; compassionate care education; using virtual reality in nursing education.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

Dr Saab has experience in teaching and assessment in general nursing and has actively contributed across a number of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in and outside his area of specialisation. These include: oncology nursing; palliative care nursing; nursing leadership and management; nursing theory; research methods; health assessment; pharmacology; pathophysiology; clinical skills; and simulation. He is also experienced in module and curriculum development and the use of innovative technologies and modern pedagogical approaches (e.g. hybrid/blended and online platforms). 

Dr Saab has supervised over 10 MSc students and is currently supervising 3 PhD students.
