Tommie McCarthy

Biography

Tommie McCarthy is a Professor in Biochemistry in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at University College Cork. Professor McCarthy has a keen interest in human molecular genetics and his research experience spans across the area of human molecular genetics and functional analysis of mutated human genes. Professor McCarthy and his team have made major contributions in the human molecular genetics field to understanding the molecular basis of the life threatening inherited disorder Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) and the associated myopathy Central Core Disease (CCD). Current human molecular genetic projects in Professor McCarthy’s lab include molecular genetic analysis of gene mutations that cause inherited human lipodystrophies with a focus on lipid and cholesterol metabolism and adipocyte development. Collaborative projects include a) initiatives on the genetics of depression and anxiety with Professor Alan Wright (Edinburgh) and Professor Ted Dinan (Psychiatry, UCC) b) Irish surname genetics with Professor William Smyth (Geography, UCC) and Dr. Susan Walsh (Yale, USA) and c) forensic genetics with Dr. Susan Walsh. Professor McCarthy also has a keen interest in molecular genetic technologies. His fundamental and applied research on DNA repair enzymes led to the development of a novel platform for detection of mutations and polymorphisms in DNA.  His recent work on gene reporters has led to the development of a single secreted luciferase reporter assay for promoter analysis. Alongside Dr. Paul Young (also in Biochemistry, UCC), Professor McCarthy is currently building and developing synthetic biology initiatives at UCC.

Professor McCarthy has more than 55 publications in international peer reviewed journals and several reviews and book chapters. His research has led to five international patent applications (three granted to date) in the DNA characterisation field, some of which have been licensed to third parties for commercial exploitation. Professor McCarthy has over 25 years of experience in competing successfully for research grant funding across several national and international research funding agencies. Professor McCarthy has extensive experience as a peer reviewer for scientific papers and research grants at the national, EU and international level. Professor McCarthy has significant experience in research strategy and planning and technology transfer.  Professor McCarthy also has significant experience in mentoring and supervision of PhD students and has directly supervised over PhD students. Professor McCarthy also has significant experience in career mentoring of undergraduates, postgraduates, postdoctoral fellows and pre-tenure career track fellows.

Professor McCarthy has a keen interest in teaching and teaching methodologies that enhance education, and learning. He has over 25 years of experience in curriculum and course development, course and degree management and course assessment at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Professor McCarthy served as Director of the BSc degree in Biomedical Science (2004-8) and served as served as Head of Department of Biochemistry from 2000-2008.
