Monica O'Mullane

Biography

Dr Monica O'Mullane is a research fellow funded by the EC Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (2018-2022), based in the Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21), University College Cork. This project (GendeResearchIreland)  is exploring the discourses of institutional actors involved the university-wide Athena SWAN processes  an institutional level. Prior to this current project, Monica was scientific coordinator of the Slovak team in the EC Framework Programme 7 funded GENOVATE (Transforming organisational culture for gender equality in research and innovation), and team lead in the DG SANCO funded ACTION-FOR-HEALTH in Trnava University, Slovakia.

Monica worked previously as a postdoctoral researcher on a Health Research Board (HRB) funded National Diabetes Register project (2008-2010) before moving to Slovakia in 2010. Monica then held a position of research fellow funded by a SAIA scholarship (Ministry of Education, Slovakia) on a project assessing Health Impact Assessment (HIA) institutionalisation and implementation in Slovakia. Monica worked on HealthNet consortium projects for the ECDC and was lecturer in public health, Trnava University, Slovakia,  before moving back to Ireland in 2018. 

HIA as a policy aiding tool in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland was the topic of her PhD (UCC, 2008). HIA remains a research and personal passion. She is a member of the Cork Healthy Cities steering group and is passionate about localized public health action for improved community and individual health, as well as working for climate action and public health. Monica is co-director of BCA Ireland. She is a member of IAIA  (International Association of Impact Assessment), EUPHA section for HIA, and the Sociological Association of Ireland.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests centre on social inequality studies, in particular health and gender, health impacts of public policy with a particular focus on Health Impact Assessment (HIA), and comparative health care systems, with a focus on qualitative research methods, including semi-structured interviews.

I have taught (in Trnava University, Slovakia) undergraduate and postgraduate modules in  Design, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programmes  (Dizajn, implementácia a hodnotenie programov podpory), Health inequalities and health determinants (Nerovnosti v zdraví a determinanty zdravia), Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and Research Methods (2010-2014).

For the Department of Public Health (UCC, currently the School of Public Health) I engaged in some teaching duties (2008-2010), and continue to contribute to the MPH programme on the topic of HIA:

Seminar delivered to Health Research Board (HRB) PhD students, Impact of Public Policy and Health Care on Population Health Department of Epidemiology and Public Health
