ABSTRACT | This paper, which is published as part of a special issue on 'Involuntary Drawing', explores the commentaries of philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty and psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan on a short sequence of slow motion footage of Henri Matisse's hand as it was at work on a painting in 1946. The stakes of these two competing interpretations of the footage were high, with the strange wanderings of the artist's hand becoming a site over which the debate between phenomenology and psychoanalysis came into focus. This paper explores that debate and its consequences for a reading of specific drawings by Matisse. | ||
