GeneralContext Cross shaft fragment.
Location churchyard at Brailsford.
Dimensions 4'5'' high.
GeneralDescription Cross shaft fragment with carvings on it, dated to about the tenth century.
GeneralDescription At the top of this fragment there is a rectangular section, which was the shaft of the cross. This has plait-work on it.
GeneralDescription Two bands of cable moulding mark the division of the two parts of the shaft.
GeneralDescription The lower part was probably the actual foot of the cross. This has a band of random interlace, with volutes and pellets, which encircles the upper portion. This is interrupted by the figure of a warrior holding a sword in his right hand, and he has a small round object in his left, possibly a target. He may have a mail-coat and close cap. There is a bit of plait-work over his right shoulder, which is filling the empty space.
