GeneralContext Cross head fragment.
Location Durham Cathedral.
Dimensions 55.2cm (21.75'') high, 52cm (20.5'') wide, and 16cm (6.25'') thick.
GeneralContext Stone type: coarse-grained, massive yellow/grey sandstone.
GeneralDescription Cross head fragment, dated to second quarter of eleventh century.
GeneralDescription In the centre there is a Crucifixion scene, surrounded by the remains of a circular roll moulding. The figure of Christ is frontal. He is wearing a knee-length tunic. Below the cross arms there are two three-quarter length frontal figures. They both have haloes and both are holding books.
GeneralDescription On the right arm is a pair of crossed ribbon animals with canine heads.
GeneralDescription On the lower arm there are the figures of a man and a bird. The bird is standing on what appear to be human legs and feet, and is looking down at the man who is bent in the curve of a branch and holding the trunk of a tree that is between them. He is wearing a short pleated garment and his head is bent back.
