Counting the Human Cost of the Irish Civil War

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

For decades, historians relied on estimates to assess the human cost of the Irish Civil War. In 2023-24, UCC historian Dr Andy Bielenberg and John Dorney, completed the first comprehensive identification of all conflict-related fatalities in Ireland between the outbreak of hostilities on 28 June 1922 and the ceasefire and ‘dump arms’ order of 24 May 1923. This enumeration of both civilian and combatant deaths enabled a wide-ranging-and at times unexpected-analysis of the nature, geographic distribution, and impact of the casualties.

In collaboration with the Atlas of the Irish Civil War team at UCC, these findings have been transformed into a searchable, interactive Civil War Fatalities map. This digital resource offers an objective lens through which to explore this complex period in Irish history. It provides accessible, accurate data that fills significant gaps in our understanding of the Civil War, while also supporting individuals seeking, in Dr Maurice Manning’s words, “to navigate their own personal commemorative paths.

In this talk, UCC's Dr Helene O'Keeffe gives an overview of the project and its findings, with suggestions about how to use the interactive map, its sources, and accompanying contextual articles in the classroom.
