Open educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources created by anyone in any medium which have been released under an open license, allowing others to access, use, distribute and adapt the resource (UNESCO, BCcampus). This means OER have the potential to be transformative in higher education. Research has shown integrating OER into courses enhances the quality and efficacy of the teaching and learning experience (OER Evidence Report 2013-2014). This talk explores the pivotal role libraries can play as changemakers through strategically integrating OER in library initiatives to support teaching and empower learning.UCC Library received Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE) funding from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education to explore the incorporation of OER into teaching and learning within UCC. From July 2023 to January 2024, the Library used funding to: review current research regarding OERs, engage with various stakeholders to gain understandings and insights to current knowledge of OERs, design and implement a pilot project incorporating OER into 3 modules, and develop an OER framework to outline requirements needed for successful implementation of OER.
This talk provides an insight into the findings of the SATLE-funded project. Attendees will receive practical insights into how Libraries can support OER adoption through the lessons learned and challenges encountered. These insights will be drawn from first-hand experience from the project and will include identifying potential funding streams, harnessing existing resources, engaging with key stakeholders, and establishing scalable service offerings. The talk will be beneficial to those interested in OER or for those currently navigating the landscape of OER integration as part of library service offerings.
