Description
Dewey believed that democracy means that every human being, independent of the quantity or range of his/her personal endowment, has the right to equal opportunity with every other person for the development of whatever gifts they have (Dewey, 1916). There is no better way of involving the person in their education than making them a partner in the process. This research focused on the students as partners, by engaging them in the design of continuous assessment (CA). Through this process, students were able to design their own version of a piece of CA and, in this manner, share their product with their peers. Students were offered a choice of which version of the CA designed, either by educators or their peers they wished to respond to in submitting their work. What was discovered from this experience, is that students as partners offer great insights into what they want to achieve and how to more clearly express these CA requirements to a broader audience. Students also reimagined how one piece of CA would fit into the tapestry of CA required across a year of a UG university programme.
