The presentation, titled “Would you do it again? How RMA study tours are effective professional development instruments for competence-building”, examines the transformative benefits and capacity-building potential of European study tours in Research Management and Administration (RMA).Drawing from the DARMA Study Tour to Ireland and INORMS Study Tour to Spain as case studies. Perspectives will include those of lead coordinators (Jan Andersen, SDU; Martha Phelan, UCC; Olga Roig Herrera, CREAF), host institutions in Ireland (UCC, TU Dublin, TCD), and Spain (with several research performing organisations) supplement with participants, exploring added value at different levels.
Study tours have proven to be high-impact interventions for professional development, fostering intercultural exchange, collaborative learning, and exposure to innovative practices across the research lifecycle. (Bhargava et al., 2024, Soman et al., 2023) They align closely with RM Comp: The European Competence Framework for Research Managers, addressing domains such as strategic engagement, governance, network-building, and communication.
For coordinators, effective programme design is crucial: balancing planning, stakeholder engagement, and evaluation to ensure sustainable impact and scalable models for future tours.
