Description
Mariska van Sprundel is a Dutch science journalist, author, and biomedical scientist specialising in running and sports science. She is the author of several books on running and regularly communicates research on endurance sport, health, and performance to public audiences through her articles, blog, lectures, and media contributions.
She writes;
Joining a running club benefited my performance, and science seems to confirm that. Economic researcher Lee-Ann Burke of University College Cork in Ireland looked at the performance of participants in the London Marathon from 2018 to 2023, which is more than 206,000. She left top athletes out of it. Over the thirties, up to seventeen percent of recreational players were members of a club (with the exception of the corona year in 2021, when the percentage was lower and many clubs had to close). Burke analyzed the participants' times and found a correlation: runners who are members of a running club invariably run faster in the marathon than runners from the same age group who are not members.
