Description

The main aim of this course is to provide the student with an understanding of the tools with which to analyse health care investment decisions. In recent times, the production and distribution of health and health care have become dominant economic and political issues globally. Economic evaluation techniques are central to the analysis of these issues. These techniques will be applied to health technologies, such as pharmaceuticals, diagnostic and surgical procedures. Methods examined include the framework for economic evaluation consisting of Cost-Minimisation Analysis, Cost-Utility Analysis, Cost-Effectiveness Analysis and Cost-Benefit Analysis. Health-related quality of life will be measured and valued. Other evaluation techniques, such as Markov Chain Modeling, will be studied. Current methodological and policy issues in economic evaluation of health care will be examined.
