Interactive and Immersive Fictions

Course

Description

This module explores how contemporary interactive and immersive storytelling approaches can challenge and expand our understanding of narrative creation across a range of medias. Through a collaborative framework, students will gain hands-on experience in developing effective story worlds and learn key concepts in narrative design, innovation and creative writing craft techniques. These skills will be studied across diverse forms such as graphic novels, interactive fiction, transmedia narratives, video games, virtual reality and immersive arts. Students will analyse examples in these forms, then workshop their own story concepts in a 'writers' room' setting.

Key questions explored in the module include: What elements contribute to a meaningful interactive or immersive narrative? Why might contemporary authors be drawn to multi-modal storytelling forms from a social perspective? How do immersive and interactive formats reshape definitions of concepts like "story", "narrative" and "audience"? What factors influence audience engagement with these experiences? And how do evolving technologies impact the way stories are told?

No prior knowledge of programming or gaming is required—only a passion for storytelling and a strong imagination. The module is grounded in practical, creative exploration and encourages teamwork, helping students to become future creators in a range of industry professions including creative writing, theatre, arts, marketing, and game design.
