Description

This module will provide students with an introduction to key areas of social policy with a specific focus on access and equity in the delivery of healthcare across the life spectrum. Issues relating to welfare, recognition, redistribution, diversity, equality, social inclusion, and the relationship between poverty and health will be explored. Key concepts such as citizenship, anti-discrimination, empowerment, advocacy, and rights will be explored. Marginalisation with reference to race, ethnicity, culture, disability, and social class will be examined. The social versus medical model of health will be explored, with a specific emphasis placed on the delivery of healthcare and health policy. Issues relating to social justice will be highlighted with a view to developing awareness on anti-discriminatory practice and intercultural skills necessary for professional practice.
