Course

Description

In this module, students explore the theory, policy and practice relating to key contemporary issues in youth work and community work. Discourse around social media and mental health in youth and community work will be examined. The prevalence of social media, the ethics of its usage, and the advantages and disadvantages of it will be investigated particularly in the context of young people's relationship with social media. The basic principles of health promotion theory and practice in the context of youth work and community work (centred on mental and sexual health) will be explored. Contemporary issues relating to mental health will be discussed with a view to facilitating people to express and advocate for their own mental health needs. Students will learn to develop skills in designing, planning, implementing and evaluating creative responses to working with young people and community groups through the use of social media and arts resources. Developed by the School of Applied Social Studies' Fern Higgins-Atkinson, Sinéad O'Neill and Elizabeth Folan O'Connor, the module includes reflective practice models and health promotion evaluation models.
