Narrative

Since taking over as Director of the Centre for Neo-Latin Studies in August 2008 I have brought in €385,000 in project funding awards for theAd Fontes Project (2009-10), the Third Tongue Project (2012-13) and the Historia Project (2011-13); a further €91,970 in postdoctoral funding; and a total of €700,000 in IRC postgraduate awards, NUI Travelling Studentships, CACSSS Excellence Awards and School of History Postgraduate Fellowships. That is, approximately €1,200,000 in funding from various sources.
Scholars at the Centre produced have an extensive list of publications within the core area of Neo-Latin Studies, including seven books. The Centre has hosted five conferences, a lecture series, and three summer schools, as well as spawning an MA programme and multiple undergraduate teaching initiatives. Throughout this period, weekly meetings of the Neo-Latin Seminar and the Spoken Latin Circle have ensured continuous intellectual activity and a vibrant research community which includes faculty members, postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and prominent local scholars otherwise unconnected to the university.
The Centre is internationally renowned for its contribution to Neo-Latin Studies, particularly with regard to Irish Neo-Latin. It also has a substantial international reputation as a centre for excellence in Spoken Latin.
