Narrative
Nicosia Beyond Barriers: Voices from a Divided City brought together writers, artists, photographers, academics, and community members from across Cyprus to document and share experiences of life in the world's last divided capital. Informed by research on postcolonialism, partition, memory, displacement, and urban space, the project created opportunities for dialogue across communities while increasing public awareness of the social, cultural, and historical complexities of division in Cyprus.Through the publication, associated public events, exhibitions, creative activities, and community engagement initiatives, the project amplified voices that are often marginalised within dominant political narratives. By foregrounding everyday experiences, cultural memories, and shared histories, the project fostered intercultural understanding and encouraged reflection on belonging, coexistence, heritage, and place.
The project engaged a wide range of participants, including writers, artists, cultural practitioners, educators, community organisations, and members of the public from different communities across Cyprus. Through these collaborations, it contributed to preserving local cultural knowledge, increasing the visibility of underrepresented perspectives, and promoting more inclusive understandings of the city and its communities.
The project's reach extended beyond Cyprus through international publication, media coverage, public talks, and engagement with academic, cultural, and community audiences. It has contributed to wider discussions on divided cities, memory, cultural heritage, and the role of literature and the arts in promoting dialogue and understanding across social and political boundaries.
