Future of Sustainable Fermentation (SUSFERM)

Organisation profile

Organisation Overview

Microbial Fermentation is the key biological process that underpins the transition to sustainable production of foods, chemicals and materials that is necessary for planetary survival.  SUSFERM, the Centre for Sustainable Fermentation and Bioprocessing Systems for Food and the Bioeconomy, delivers a powerful interdisciplinary focus to address major challenges and opportunities in the allied areas of sustainable food production and the circular bioeconomy.

SUSFERM provides the integrated research framework, from microbial strain selection and engineering, through upstream and downstream bioprocess development, and on to scale-up that is required for modern biotechnology and biomanufacturing. As well as hosting Principal Investigators from all these areas, SUSFERM operates an accessible, supported Microbial Fermentation Research Infrastructure that enables rapid parallel development of strains and processes.

Partnerships with national pilot scale facilities at the Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, and internationally through membership of the European Research Infrastructure, IBISBA, enables SUSFERM rapidly progress microbial innovations up the value chain. The Centre also maintains an outward-facing perspective on skills needs for the sector and offers a suite of education and training, including an MengSc in Industrial Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing.
