Organisation Overview

The Future Humanities Institute acts as a development catalyst and advocacy group for the daring work that arts and humanities researchers undertake at UCC.

Our vanguard Radical Humanities Laboratory, our thematic clusters, and our smaller centres are Europe-leading exemplars of how interdisciplinary adventure and critical engagement with culture can make significant impacts in society: in how we think, in what we value, what we imagine, and in social change.

We advocate for, and exemplify, the crucial role that the arts and humanities can play in cultivating our collective imagination and in transforming our human future for the better.

We adventure within and across disciplines to develop unique methodological approaches to understanding and to then having impact on how our culture works. We assert new ways of thinking and doing that open doors to radical change for the better.  We advocate for both non-traditional research outcomes and more traditional ones: embodied, ecological, artistic, and applied cultural knowledge is as important as the written and mediatized word and image.

We believe in equality, and we explore ways to bring marginalized people and ideas further into the cultural picture. We believe in interdisciplinary collaboration, and we have much to offer the social, ecological, biological, medical sciences, as well as engineering and wider scientific approaches. We believe that cultural change for the better matters.
