Biography
Dr Aaron Lim is a Senior Lecturer in Marine Geosciences at University College Cork (UCC), where he serves as Director of the PGCert in MetOcean for Offshore Wind, co-Director of the MSc in Applied Coastal and Marine Management, and Head of the Earth and Ocean Lab. He holds a PhD in Marine Geosciences, and his research focuses on seabed habitat mapping, the development of novel seabed and marine environmental mapping and monitoring methods, and contemporary seabed processes. Since 2017, Dr Lim has secured >€6.4 million in research funding from agencies including Research Ireland, Irish Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, the Marine Institute, Horizon 2020, PIP, Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, the Geological Survey of Ireland, and the Environmental Protection Agency. He has published 40 peer-reviewed articles and received multiple awards, including the Irish Research Council Early Career Researcher of the Year, UCC Early-Stage Researcher of the Year, the President’s Award for Research into Innovative Forms of Teaching, and the Gold Medal Delap Prize. Two of his articles were selected as Editors’ Choice in Nature Scientific Reports, one listed among the "Top 100 in Earth Science" and another as "Editors’ Choice for Coral Reefs". Dr Lim brings prior senior management experience from the offshore survey industry and has held research roles at UCC and the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences. He previously served on the EuroFleets+ Scientific Advisory Committee and has participated in 17 research cruises (five as Chief Scientist), spanning the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast Atlantic, Celtic Sea, and Irish Sea.
Research Interests
- Development of novel marine and coastal mapping and monitoring methods
- Innovative applications of marine geomatics, imaging, and spatial analysis for multibeam bathymetry, photogrammetry, acoustic backscatter (side-scan sonar and multibeam snippets), magnetometry, ROV and AUV operations, sub-bottom profiling, and point cloud data
- Understanding active and recent seabed processes
- Mapping cold-water coral habitats in space and time
- Designing effective and environmentally-friendly offshore survey strategies
