Abigail Keating

Dr Abby Keating is BA Director and Lecturer in Film and Screen Media at University College Cork. She graduated with a PhD in Film from UCC in 2015, with a thesis on cities in contemporary European cinemas. Prior to that, she studied at UCC and the University of Bordeaux, taking a BA International in Language and Cultural Studies and MA in Film Studies.

Her main film practice is currently music video production and visual graphics for indepdendent artists. Prior to this, she worked as a freelance video editor, videographer, photographer, and web designer for a number of organisations and publications. Her film/video practice has also included work in live arts, on factual projects, and in national campaigns. She has previously lectured at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin and was Visiting Scholar at the University of Lisbon. She has also worked as a research assistant and video editor on the nationally funded project Capturing the Nation: Irish Home Movies, 1930-1970, a collaboration with the Irish Film Institute.

Broadly, her published work and research projects focus on: women and contemporary film and media; gender representation; political media; feminist and queer theory; digital culture; and protest media. She has published on each of these areas, and her forthcoming monograph Women in Irish Cinema: Identity and Autonomy on the Contemporary Screen will be published later in 2026 by Edinburgh University Press.

As a student in 2011, she co-founded the open access journal Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media, of which she has since been a member of the Editorial and Consultative Boards and has previously served as the web designer and content editor.

For the Department of Film and Screen Media, she is currently the BA Director and the Erasmus and Year Abroad Coordinator.

She welcomes PhD proposals and inquiries from scholars and creative practitioners working within any of her research/practical areas.
