Biography

Dr Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh is an award-winning poet and a lecturer in Modern Irish. She graduated from NUI Galway in 2005 with a First Class BA International degree in Irish and French, attaining the top mark in Irish that year (1916 Scholarship). She spent periods studying in Université de Rennes 2 and teaching in Université de Bordeaux 3. After completing an MA in Modern Irish, she taught Irish at the City University of New York with the Fulbright programme. A recipient of the IRCHSS Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship, she undertook her doctoral research at the Centre for Irish Studies, NUI Galway, on the French influence on the Gaelic Revival, 1893-1922. Her thesis was awarded the Adele Dalsimer Prize for Distinguished Dissertation at the American Conference for Irish Studies in 2014 and a Mention du Jury at the Franco-Irish Dissertation Awards, sponsored by the French Embassy in Ireland. She has previously taught at NUI Galway and Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. She joined UCC initially as an IRC Postdoctoral Fellow in 2016, and was appointed as lecturer in 2017. Ailbhe received an Alumni Award from NUI Galway in 2018 and is the current holder of Parnell’s Walking Stick. Among her literary prizes are the Michael Harnett Award and the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Poetry Prize. Her poetry has been translated to many languages including English, French, German, Galician, Spanish, Italian, Macedonian, Greek, and Japanese. Twentieth-century and contemporary writing in Irish; Creative Writing; Ecocriticism; The Revival Period; Torna, Prof Tadhg Ó Donnchadha and his family; Literary Translation; The interplay between Gaelic culture and the wider world

Teaching Activities

I teach Irish-language poetry both in the original Irish and in translation. I also teach Creative Writing to postgraduate students.
