Research Interests

I lead Mental Health research in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. My interests focus on children, young people and marginalised groups, as well as mental health promotion, self-harm and suicide. I have published extensively on the co-production of research and education with experts by experience (of mental health services). I am currently principal investigator on a number of funded research projects including studies to; explore the needs of first responders (Garda, Fire service, ambulance service, coast guard, community first responders, RNLI) when attending the scene of a suspected suicide; an international educational intervention based on Trauma Informed Care, to reduce seclusion, restraint and restrictive practices in child and and adolescent mental health service, children's hospitals and residential care through trauma informed education; co-create a children's mental health policy for Malta in partnership with their government; evaluate an online support programme for people experiencing suicidal ideation; conduct a systematic review and concept analysis of 'lived experience' in health care. Previous funded studies have included; an exploration of the experiences of service users, their parent/guardians, General Practitioners and staff of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Ireland; a national project on suicide and self harm awareness among h
