Aisling Shalvey

Dr Aisling Shalvey is a historian of medicine, specialising in the era from the Second World War to the immediate postwar era. Her PhD at the University of Strasbourg was funded by the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah in Paris. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher and project coordinator with the German National Academy of Science and Medicine at the Leopoldina on a project concerning victims of biomedical research during National Socialism, which was funded by the Max Planck Society. She is also vice - chairperson in the COST Action project HIDDEN concerning the history of identity documentation and migration. Her first book entitled Paediatrics In The Reichsuniversität Straßburg Children's Medicine at a Bastion of Nazi Ideology was published in 2023 with Exeter University Press. Aisling contributed to the volume Do Less Harm: Ethical Questions for Health Historians with Johns Hopkins University Press on the topic of human remains collections, published in 2025. She now is a co-convenor for the Ethics and/in the History of Medicine and the Human Sciences group in the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine.

She is a Marie Sklodowska Curie fellow at University College Cork on the topic of postwar migration and health advocacy; her project title is Unaccompanied Children’s Access to Healthcare (1945-1950) (UCARE1945). You can find more information on the project here: https://www.ucc.ie/en/ucare1945/
