Personal profile

Biography

I joined the Department of Philosophy at University College Cork in 2016. Prior to my appointment at UCC, I held academic positions at the University of Graz, the University of Basel, the University of Vienna, and at the Center for Subjectivity Research at the University of Copenhagen, where I continue to collaborate as a Research Associate. I have also served as a Research Fellow at the University of Memphis, the University of Okayama, and University College Dublin, and as a Visiting Professor at several European universities, including Graz, Marburg, Milan (Vita-Salute San Raffaele), and Cagliari.

My research lies at the intersection of phenomenology, philosophical psychology, moral psychology, and social philosophy. Recent work focuses on the nature of intentionality (both singular and collective), the structure and sociality of emotions, and the role of affective life in moral evaluation, self-understanding, and self-deception—along with the disruptions of these phenomena in psychopathology. Across these topics, I am particularly interested in how our emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal capacities shape the interplay between personal and social identity. Methodologically, I integrate classical phenomenology with analytic philosophy of mind and engage with the empirical sciences of the mind.

A central strand of my scholarship is devoted to Early Phenomenology—especially the Brentano School and the glorious Munich and Göttingen Circles—and to bringing their insights to bear on contemporary debates in philosophy.
