Biography

Dr Andrea Visentin is an Assistant Professor and the PhD Programme Director at the School of Computer Science & IT at University College Cork (Ireland). He holds a BSc and an MSc in Computer Engineering from the University of Padua (Italy) and completed a PhD at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics (UCC). 

 

His research focuses on optimization, artificial intelligence, and their combination. In optimization, the main emphasis is on stochastic inventory control and lot sizing. In AI, his work includes applications in boolean satisfiability, time series forecasting, infrastructure health prediction, medical biophotonics, and supply chain optimization. He is a Funded Investigator at the SFI Insight Centre for Data Analytics, a Principal Investigator for the DATAMITE Horizon Europe project, and part of the SFI Centre for Research Training in AI, the Tyndall National Institute and the TAILOR research network. 

 

 

Research Interests

In AI, his work includes applications in boolean satisfiability, time series forecasting, infrastructure health prediction, medical biophotonics, and supply chain optimization. Andrea is interested in AI and ethics. He collaborated with the European Commission High-Level Expert Group on AI (HLEG-AI) on the development of the Assessment List for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (ALTAI) tool and the development of the TAILOR Handbook of Trustworthy AI, which aims to describe AI concepts to a lay audience.

Teaching Activities

Andrea has been lecturing at UCC since 2019. He is now teaching Data Analytics for Digital Humanities I & II (CS2213, CS2215) and Data Mining (CS3033, CS6405). He is a dedicated lecturer with a teaching philosophy focused on making learning relevant, engaging, and practical. He believes in preparing students for real-world challenges by connecting course content to industry needs and using hands-on activities to reinforce key concepts. His approach emphasizes active learning, continuous assessment, and tailoring teaching methods to suit different learning styles. Drawing on his training in teaching and learning, Andrea constantly reviews and improves his methods based on student feedback and outcomes. By integrating practical skills and real-world applications into his teaching, he helps students build the knowledge and confidence they need to succeed in the workplace. His commitment to teaching, the quality of the curriculum, and the positive impact on students have been recognized by the UCC President’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching 2023/24 (Early-career Teaching Staff category), which was awarded on the 3rd of December 2024.
