Biography
Dr Anna Safuta is Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at University College Cork, Ireland. She holds a PhD in the social and political sciences from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain, Belgium), and has previously held postdoctoral positions at the University of Bremen and University of Tübingen, in Germany.
Anna's research focuses on the impacts of migration, public policy, and colonial pasts on individual lives and wider societal dynamics. Using qualitative methods including process tracing and comparative research designs, she examines policy-making and policy inertia affecting migration, the welfare state, the world of work, and gender and racialisation. She focuses particularly on the circulation of people, ideas, and resources between Eastern and Western Europe, with expertise on Belgium, Germany, and Poland. Her recent work includes research on innovative strategies of labour activism among transnationally mobile workers.
At UCC, Anna teaches economic sociology and social policy (SC1020 States, Economies, and Societies); the sociology of gender and feminist theory (SC3046 Gender, Sexuality, and Inequality); migration, race, and coloniality (SC2012 Race, Ethnicity, Migration and Nationalism); decolonial approaches to the environment (SC6642 Social Theory and Climate Justice); and research design and methods (CR6010). Anna welcomes inquiries from prospective PhD students interested in migration studies, labour issues and the sociology of work, welfare state research, and decolonial approaches to public policy.
