Dr Ashkar is a Senior Postdoc in Marine Energy and Hydro-Environmental Engineering at University College Cork (UCC) and a core researcher in the Structural and Hydro-Environmental Dynamics (SHED) Lab within UCC's School of Engineering and Architecture.
Previously, Ashkar served at Khulna University, Bangladesh, as an Assistant Professor from 2010 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015. Prior to his academic career, he was awarded the prestigious President's Gold Medal for graduating top of his bachelor class.
Dr Ashkar holds a PhD in Civil (Coastal) Engineering from University of Galway, Ireland. He was a Govt. of Ireland PhD Scholar, funded through the IRC (now Research Ireland).
At UCC, Dr Ashkar has contributed to several research projects supported by Research Ireland, the Marine Institute, and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). His research focuses on marine and coastal hydrodynamics, hydro-environmental processes, offshore renewable energy, and the application of numerical modelling to support sustainable ocean engineering solutions.
