Personal profile

Biography

I am a Research Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow looking at food, farming and cultural renewal in the Aspromonte mountains, Italy. The title of my current research project is: 'Mountain Mobilities: 'Modernity', Mobility and Renewal in the Aspromonte'. While I am based in the Italian department, my research is situated across Environmental Humanities and Cultural Studies. I am keen to share my work with non-academic audiences - you can find out about my research here. My PhD thesis drew on oral history interviews and textual analysis to examine the self-perception and self-representation by Calabrians of their Calabrian identity in both Calabria and Victoria, Australia in light of stereotypes of crime and 'backwardness'. This research was funded by the South West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership. During this time I lectured on the Organised Crime and Democracy unit at the University of Bath. In 2022 I won the ASMI Postgraduate Essay prize and my article 'Calabrian self-perception and the struggle for recognition in the context of ’Ndrangheta stereotypes' was published in Modern Italy in 2024.

I am also a recipient of the 2025 Society for Italian Studies Networking Scheme.
