Biography
Dr Brendan O'Flynn received his M,Eng SC at the National Microelectronics Research Centre UCC and his PhD at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork. He is a Senior Head of group for the Wireless Sensor Networks Research Group at Tyndall and leads the Human Centric Systems Research Cluster. He is a Principal Investigator and Research Leader, currently exploring and developing novel smart sensing technologies. With an industry aligned research agenda, he has worked to develop, define and lead the research activities of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) group, at Tyndall National Institut. As a Research Ireland Investigator In CONFIRM, CONNECT, INSIGHT and Vistamilk, and as part of Tyndall's Research strategy development team, he has focused the research activities of the Wireless Sensor Network Group on an industry-relevant applied research agenda in the development of Microelectronic Circuits and Systems. This has been realised through the provision of context aware sensing systems as part of national and international work programs. As part of numerous academic and industry partnerships, these circuits and systems developed using a hardware software co-design approach and including complex data fusion algorithms to analyse multiple sensor streams, and the exploitation of the relevant IP, licensed to commercial partners as part of our "Internet of Things" research agenda, with a focus on smart Human Centric Systems research.
The focus of HCS research is in developing novel smart sensing technologies in conjunction with an industry aligned fundamental and applied wearable systems research agenda. As such, we are developing system level hardware and software for the "Internet of Things" in the applications we are investigating, such as: Human machine interfacing (HMI, Wearable Healthcare, Sustainable Sensing for agriculture and Biodiversity).
