Biography

Dr Carolanne Mahony is a lecturer and researcher in the Business Information Systems department, Cork University Business School (CUBS), University College Cork, Ireland. She is co-director of the MSc in Design and Development of Digital Business.

Carolanne is the Founder and Director of Eitic, a multidisciplinary research cluster which aims to anticipate the future negative impacts of information systems and effect positive change. Previous to re-entering academia to complete her PhD, she spent several years working in supply chain.

Carolanne was awarded a PhD in 2017 from University College Cork. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. In 2023, Carolanne won the Irish Academy of Management (IAM) Outstanding Business Educator of the Year Award.

Carolanne has acted as an associate editor for the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) and a reviewer for the following IS journals and conferences: Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS) Journal of Medical Internet research (JMIR) Journal of Medical Internet research: mHealth and uHealth (JMIR mHealth and uHealth) Journal of Medical Internet research: Mental Health (JMIR Mental Health) Journal of Decision Systems (JDS) Journal of Information Systems Education (JISE) International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS)

Research Interests

Carolanne's research interests focus on analysing the current and future impacts of Information systems to effect positive change. To this end, her research interests include: The Dark Side of IT, How individuals assess and use information systems, Citizen-engaged research, and The scholarship of teaching & learning.

Carolanne has previously published in the areas of Internet Governance, Technostress, IS Security, Decision Support, and Information Behaviour. Carolanne has published articles in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Internet Research, Information Technology & People, Computers in Human Behavior, and the Journal of Decision Systems. She has also published in conferences such as Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HCIS), European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), IFIP WG 8.3 Decision Support Open Conference, and ACM Collective Intelligence Conference.

Teaching Activities

Carolanne has experience lecturing at undergraduate, postgraduate and executive levels, with class sizes ranging from 8 to 134. She has taught various Information Systems (IS) subjects, including web development, systems analysis and design, e-commerce and e-health. More recently, her teaching has focused on the design of IS, covering topics such as IS trends, design thinking, user experience design, ethics, internationalisation and accessibility.

Carolanne has been the co-director of the MSc in Design and Development of Digital Business since 2019. Carolanne won the Irish Academy of Management (IAM) Outstanding Business Educator of the Year Award in 2023.
