Biography
I am born in the vicinity of Stuttgart in Germany and studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Tuebingen and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After completion of my doctorate in Mathematics at the University of Stuttgart I spent the next seven years in Canada, first at Queen's University in Kingston as a postdoctoral fellow and assistant adjunct professor, and then as an assistant professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. From 2007 to 2009 I enjoyed visiting assistant professorships at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. During the summer of 2009 I returned to Europe as a researcher at Aberystwyth University in Wales. I joined UCC as a lecturer at the School of Mathematical Sciences in December 2012.
Research Interests
My research is related to the following subjects: Free and Noncommutative Probability Operator Algebras and Quantum Groups Quantum Control and Quantum Information Quantum Dynamics and Subfactors Symmetries and Invariance Principles Noncommutative probability is a modern research area in mathematics which grew out of the needs to model randomly occuring quantum events. It uses the language of operator algebras and plays an increasing role in applications like quantum control or quantum information, both among the key technologies of the 21st century. On the other hand it is intimately connected with several fascinating areas in pure mathematics, for example free probability, quantum dynamics, quantum groups, subfactor theory, representations of large groups, or distributional symmetries and invariance principles.
