Biography
Colette is an innovative and passionate educator and advocate of global public health that stems from her background in the area and in nursing and midwifery. Her primary qualification is in nursing and midwifery, followed by a BA in EU studies, then MAs in Public Policy and Public Health. She joined UCC in 2010 and is presently employed as a college lecturer and Principal Investigator in the School of Public Health. Her expertise in global health stems from first-hand experience in Sub-Saharan Africa (22 nations to date), the Caribbean and Central Asia, predominately health system strengthening and working with the UN agencies UNAIDS, UNDP and UNICEF, the Global Fund and International NGOs. This work has earned an international reputation and consequently she in demand as a speaker and research collaborator. More recently, this reputation has led to being invited by ASPHER to join their Task Force on War and their Scientific Advisory Committee. Colette is an active Executive Committee member of UCCs Centre for Global Development (CGD). In addition, Colette is well known for her innovative techniques in teaching and particularly for online teaching. Following a MA in e Learning, Design and Development, she played a key role in the development of online courses within the School of Public Health. She was the first coordinator and proponent of online education in the School of Public Health, developing the successful Online Masters in Public Health. In 2015, she won the Wiley Faculty Fellows Award for her commitment and excellence in developing this course and higher education. Colette's main interest lies in global health - health inequalities but specifically in the following areas. Sustainable Development Goals Migration and public health Public Health in Complex humanitarian crises War and Public Health HIV and AIDS Tuberculosis Malaria Palliative Care as a human right
Teaching Activities
Colette's teaching interests lie in the area of Global Public Health, specifically related to health inequalities, the big four (HIV, TB, Malaria and NTDs and the Sustainable Development Goals. More recently, her interest has focused on migration and health, and public health in humanitarian crises including the impact of War and conflict. She teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels both within and outside of the School of Public Health.
