Dr Damien Haberlin is a Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher and principal investigator in the Sustainability Institute, UCC, with over a decade of experience in marine biology with a primary focus on the intersection of marine ecology and human industrial activities. Damien completed his PhD 2018, which investigated the physical and biological factors that influence gelatinous zooplankton, their distribution and/or aggregation and, carried out applied research on jellyfish - aquaculture interactions. Damien also uses advanced biotelemetry technologies such as satellite and acoustic tagging to track megafuna species, to understand their behaviour with a strong focus on the sensitivity of elasmobranch species to the potential impacts of offshore renewable energy development.
Damien is currently researching the potential impacts of Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) on pelagic and demersal elasmobranch species including tope, lesser spotted catsharks and flappper skate. He has a strong focus on the effects of habitat modification, Electromagnetic Fields (EMF), identifying Essential Fish Habitat (EFH). Within the MOSAIC project, Damien is investigating the mesopelagic prey fields within the Deep Scattering Layer (DSL), to understand their reponse to climate change and the bottom up effects on higher predators.
