Research Interests

My research interests are: laboratory and clinical trials of orthodontic materials; fluoride and caries prevention in orthodontic treatment; post-orthodontic retention; three-dimensional imaging and imaging techniques, class II division 2 malocclusion.Laboratory and Clinical Trials of Orthodontic MaterialsThree Cochrane reviews have impacted on the orthodontic profession the paucity of good quality research in the area of orthodontic adhesives for bonding and banding of teeth. However two of our studies were listed in these reviews as indicative of good quality clinical trials. The first RCT of one-year duration on SEP was conducted by our group and indicated its clinical efficacy.Another study highlighted for the first time the poor reproducibility of forces with lacebacks and has made clinicians aware of this deficiencyChlorhexidine has been added to glass ionomer for band cementation and proved not to significantly degrade its mechanical properties in the concentrations usedFluoride and Caries Prevention in Orthodontic TreatmentNovel techniques were used to develop a new in vitro model for fluoride release from band cements and also to evaluate the effect of surface abrasion on fluoride release from orthodontic cementsThe effect of fluoride exposure on caries prevention was also investigated using a validated in vitro modelA Cochrane review has highlighted the need for further clinical trials in this fieldPost-Orthodontic Retention A Cochrane review has indicated the lack of quality evidence in this field. An RCT is ongoing which has indicated superior clinical efficacy of bonded over Essix retainers in the lower archThree-dimensional imaging, imaging techniques and class II division 2 malocclusion. A new method of assessing facial volumetric changes after orthognathic sur
