Biography
BA (History; Royal Holloway, University of London) 1996; PhD (University of London) 2004.Prior to BA studies: language teacher (German as a Foreign Language); boarding school teacher near the Lac de Neuchatel in Switzerland.2000-2005 Royal Holloway, University of London (Associate Lecturer; sabbatical covers for professors Peter Longerich and Pamela Pilbeam); since October 2005 University College Cork (Lecturer in Modern European History). Research in French and German archives, with the focus on 1) Franco-German relations and the development of German nationalism in the nineteenth century up to the First World War; 2) Alsace during the period of German annexation (1871-1918). Currently a research monograph on the relationship between Imperial Germany and German-annexed Alsace is in preparation.Main Teaching areas: 1) European History since the Thirty Years War, in particular 19c and 20c history; 2) German History, with focus on: 19c German nationalism; National Socialism, the Third Reich and the Holocaust; post-1945 history; 3) History of European Anti-Semitism; History of Zionism and of the Middle East conflict.Representation of University College Cork School of History in EU Commission-funded Erasmus programme of 'tuning' teaching curricula among European universities' History departments (ClioHnet2; Clioh-World); Participation in Clioh-World programme of developing guidelines and teaching material in Transnational History and Regional History.Extensive activities in the realms of Schools Liaison and Outreach into the Wider Community: 1) organisation of guest lectures at University College Cork, particularly in the realm of Holocaust education in liaison with the Holocaust Education Trust Ireland; 2) Schools essay competition and Schools Open Days; 3) Lectures for secondary schools, intended to promote the study of History (such as the recent lecture on the Fall o
