Biography

Professor Elaine Lehane is Vice Head of Graduate Studies at the College of Medicine and Health and Vice Dean of Teaching and Learning in the School of Nursing & Midwifery. Elaine’s research and scholarly work concentrate on deepening our understanding and application of: (1) the most effective methods for translating evidence into practice to improve clinical outcomes, and (2) the best teaching approaches for evidence-based practice, with a focus on enhancing health professional education. Over the past five years, Elaine has led/co-led five national and international projects, securing €2.9 million in funding. These projects leveraged her methodological expertise in evidence generation, implementation, and translation in the following areas: cancer prevention for individuals with intellectual disabilities, healthcare workforce well-being, breastfeeding support for sustainable population health, and building capacity for teaching evidence-based practice in higher education. Additionally, during this period, she has served as a Co-Applicant on six national and international projects, further expanding her contributions to evidence-based healthcare and education through collaborative, multidisciplinary research initiatives. Elaine has over 120 research outputs with 65 of these in peer reviewed journals, a h-Index of 25 and 3,170 citations according to google scholar. Professor Lehane oversees the school’s implementation of the University’s Strategic Goal 2, 'Student Success'. In this role, she draws on her comprehensive experience in teaching and learning, having previously served as Vice-Dean of Postgraduate Education

Research Interests

Professor Lehane’s research interests focuses on developing, implementing and sustaining evidence-based practice initiatives to enhance care quality and equity to improve health outcomes. She has specific interest and expertise in participatory action research, evidence synthesis, process evaluation and integrated knowledge translation to ensure best practice scientific approaches to intervention development, implementation and evaluation. Elaine's research programme emphasises cross-boundary collaboration, bringing together diverse stakeholders, particularly in the academic-clinical domain. Her work reflects significant interdisciplinarity, engaging fields such as Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology, Economics, and Ethics. Elaine's collaborative network reaches internationally, including partnerships with four national higher education institutions (QUB, UCD, UL, TCD) and six active international collaborations across Europe and the USA.

Teaching Activities

Through experience, scholarly inquiry, and professional development, Professor Lehane continually refines her teaching and learning methods, always prioritising engaged enquiry by creating an environment that fosters problem-solving, inquisitiveness, and a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. Her interests include quality assurance in teaching and learning, with a focus on ensuring that educational practices and outcomes in higher education lead to meaningful student learning experiences and effectively prepare students for professional practice.
