Dr Elizabeth (Liz) O' Connell is a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery since 2024. She previously worked in the School of Nursing and Midwifery as a Lecturer Practitioner between 2006 and 2011 when she divuded her time between teaching and assessing nursing students in theoretical modules and supporting nursing students on clinical placement.
Liz has extensive clinical experience having worked in Intensive Care and Acute Neurorehabilitation. She specialised in Care of the Older Person and has held posts in clinical leadership, quality and risk management and practice development in the context of residential care for older people. She led the implementation of Age Friendly Healthcare in a large community nursing unit.
Liz also worked in the community with the Integrated Care Program for Older People as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner where she developed a Case Management approach to supporting frail older people in the community. This approach has now been adopted acropss Cork/Kerry Community Healthcare.
Liz is a registered nurse, a registered nursed prescriber and registered Advanced Nurse Prasctitioner. She holds a Doctorate in Nursing, MSc Nursing Studies and Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Liz was committed to learning throughout her clinical career and completed a Post Graduaute Diploma in Critical Care Nursing, a Post Graduate Diploma in Gerontology and a Post Graduate Certficate in Nurse Prescribing. She trained as an Instructor in Patient Moving and Handling, CPR, Adult Safeguarding Training and Prevention and Management of Agression and Violence in Healthcare.
Liz has conducted research in the area of nurse patient relationships, nurse education and nurse prescribing. She has also evaluated the success of the FAST campaign with funding from the Noel Hickey Bursary at the Irish Heart Foundation. Her doctoral thesis investigated recognition and response to stroke in the community.
Liz's current research interests are in the areas of Advanced Healthcare Directives and Age Friendly Care. She is currently co-PI on a national study funded by the Irish Hospice Foundation evaluating the impact of Future Care Planning for individuals recieving palliative care.
